General and specific objectives of the project
The proposed project stick together to the general goal of the program, to develop the research infrastructure allowing the researchers to take advantage of advanced equipments, having a high quality management, and to uphold the participation of Romania to research, development and innovation programs. The program aims the development of research infrastructure: innovation, research abilities expansion in the Universities. Our project propose the development/expantion of the Applied Organometallic Chemistry Laboratory, part of the Organic and Computational Chemistry whit Applications in Nanotechnology Centre, accredited CNCSIS in 2005, a modern laboratory, equipped for classic organic and organometallic synthesis but not for separation of the reaction products. The program also aims the improvement of the research facilities and of the capacity to use and offer specialized scientific and technologic service for high technology area in Universities. One of our research group concerns the preparation of advanced materials, domain of high interest. In this field the rapid characterization is crucial so the sur-place access to high performance specific equipment is needed to assume the priority and intelectual property in case of economically relevant results.
The specific objectives of the project are connected with the improvement of the research activities of the group, in the organic and organometallic chemistry and material science.
To achieve environmental friendly synthesis, with high yields and selectivity. For this purpose, besides the SYNTHOS 3000 high power microwave equipment, which already exist in our laboratory due to a part of our group, and ultrasound activating equipment, we propose to purchase microwave equipment which proceed by using “Simultaneous Cooling Method”. The advantage of this method is that it allows to carry out synthesis at low temperature (-80oC).
Separation/Isolation, identification and characterization of the synthesized compounds. to up-grade our qualitative standards we propose to purchase a HPLC system which will allow the separation of the reaction products, including enantiomers – one of the group interest is the asymmetric synthesis, as it could be seen from the CEEX projects grants presented in theCV’s. The GC-MS system is a very important instrument in the identification and characterization of the reaction products. To be provided with the direct introduction mode of the probe is crucial for the investigation of the macrocycles and organometallic compounds. These equipments come to upgrade the laboratory research possibilities (along with the NMR, FT-IR, UV-VIS, X-Ray Diffractometer, equipments for the investigation of the electrochemical properties, etc. available in the Faculty) and the Liquid Chromatograph- Mass Spectrometer system on the way of being purchased Further more, we propose to buy a Polarimeter to mesure the optical rotation.
Investigation of the reaction mechanisms. To design the synthetic strategy and eventually the procedures for up-scale, important step for the technology transfer, it is crucial to elucidate the reaction kinetics. Keeping that in mind, we proposed to purchase a high performance Stopped-flow Spectrometer in order to improve the competitivity of the Romanian research. As far as we know there is no such equipment in Romania.
Study of the optical properties of the materials. A significant part of our team is involved in the synthesis organic derivatives with unconventional physical properties. Some recent articles contain successful investigations from the nonlinear optical properties point of view on similar material to those synthesized by us. Such equipment at hand will offer us the possibility to protect our results, because we are not forced to take advantage of foreign partners.
