Project general information
Project: Sustainable development of decarbonized industrial processes using calcium looping technology
Finaciar support: Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research, CNCS - UEFISCDI
Project code: PN-IV-P8-8.1-PRE-HE-ORG-2024-0228
Contract number: 90PHE/2025
Period: 2025 - 2026
Achieving climate neutrality is a paramount importance topic in modern society considering the continuous increase of global energy consumption and the challenges in limiting greenhouse gas emissions (mainly CO2). Accordingly, the development and large-scale deployment of innovative energy-efficient CO2 capture and utilization technologies is an important aspect to be considered. The main aim of this project is to increase the institutional research capacity of various innovative CO2 capture and utilization technologies with a particular accent on the Calcium Looping (CaL) method for energy-efficient decarbonization of industrial processes. In this respect, various relevant energy-intensive industrial processes are to be evaluated as illustrative cases such as heat & power generation, cement, iron and steel, chemicals, direct air CO2 capture (DAC) etc.
The project proposes to increase the research capability of the Chemical engineering department and the Doctoral school of chemical engineering from Babes-Bolyai University in the field of CO2 capture and utilization technologies integrated with renewable energy sources to deliver negative carbon emissions. A particular emphasis is placed on continuing and broadening technical expertise in the field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. The experimental and numerical evaluations of renewable-based CCUS technologies will be then incorporated in detailed techno-economic and environmental impact (done by Life Cycle Analysis - LCA) evaluations of decarbonized industrial processes. The main outcomes of the project target the increase of research capacity in the field of innovative CO2 capture and utilization technologies by attending to different relevant scientific events, increasing the number of publications and project applications within this research domain etc.
