The continuous increase over the last decades of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, one of the most significant greenhouse gases, represents a potential risk to the global society from an environmental point of view. Development of performant and energy-efficient CO2 capture technologies is extremely relevant and important. This project is proposing novel and innovative concepts to improve the overall CO2 capture performance and energy efficiency indicators simultaneously with developing a highly time-flexible and controlled capture plant. The new innovative concepts are: the intensification of CO2 absorption process by increasing the gas-liquid contact area using a three-phase fluidized absorber and maximization of CO2 absorption efficiency by glycerol addition to alkanolamine solutions. The time flexible management of CO2 capture plant could be achieved by an advanced
model predictive control (MPC) system. Therefore, this project has proposed to develop an efficient control system using the dynamic response of the carbon capture unit integrated with the power plant. Other important part of the project is assessment of techno-economic and environmental impact in case of flexible operation for CO2 capture processes integrated with fossil-based power plants. Coupling economic models with dynamic process models to study the sensitivity of electricity prices during flexible CO2 capture plant operation and identification of process variables with the highest impact will be assessed.
