Professor Mager Sorin was born in Arad, on 7 May 1931 and passed away on 27 December 2008. He obtained his PhD degree in Organic Chemistry with the title of the thesis: "o-Nitrobenzylydene acetals of myoinositol", defended at the "Babeş-Bolyai" University, Cluj-Napoca.

He helded different positions: 1953-1958 teaching assistant ("Babeş-Bolyai"University, Cluj-Napoca); 1958-1961 chemist in "Terapia" drug plant; 1961 - 1963 teaching assistant (Pedagogical Institute of Cluj-Napoca); 1963 - 1968 lecturer (Pedagogical Institute of Cluj-Napoca); 1968 - 1970 lecturer ("Babeş-Bolyai"University, Cluj-Napoca); 1970 - 1990 associated professor ("Babeş-Bolyai" University, Cluj-Napoca); 1990 - Professor ("Babeş-Bolyai" University); between 1990 and 2000: head of the Organic Chemistry Department, vicedean and dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

He was awarded with C. D. Nenitzescu Prize of the Romanian Academy (1992).
Stages abroad:
- postdoctoral fellowship (National Science Foundation), Notre Dame University at Notre Dame, Indiana, USA, 1971 - 1972, at Prof. Ernest Eliel;
- visiting professor, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina USA and Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, USA, 1994.

Research fields: stereochemistry (conformational analysis of saturated hexaatomic heterocycles), organic structural analysis, fine synthesis.

He published 6 books (one in a french Publishing House) and he was collaborator to the "Encyclopedia of Chemistry" volumes 2, 3, 6 - more than 110 papers (45 in foreign reviews). He is also the author of 16 textbooks for students, guides for practical works and 14 patents.

Professor Mager was member of the Romanian Chemical Society and was also the Member of American Chemical Society (ACS). He was referee for 52 PhD theses in the period 1968 - 1998 and supervisor of 12 PhD thesis defended in the period 1992-2006.
