ABSTRACT
This project is focussed on the design, synthesis and structural analysis of some complex supramolecular systems formed with the participation of new coronands and cryptands (as hosts) and ionic and molecular species (as guests) in order to identify the possibility to obtain devices for the molecular electronics (logical gates and memories). |

The project proposes the synthesis of five series of new cryptands with extended aromatic units and two series of coronands with phenothiazine units and the synthesis of some of their supramolecular host-guest compounds. The design of host molecules allows the interaction of the target macrocycles with chemical (complexations, pH modifications, redox and other reactions) and physical stimuli (different frequency radiations) in order to determine important structural modifications.
The target transformations of the supramolecular systems could reproduce at molecular scale the action of some of the components of the computers (logical gates and memories) or the dynamics of these transformations could be compared with the work of different tools and in this case the supramolecular coumpounds could be considered as molecular devices. The design of the macrocycles is supported by the high experience of the involved research groups in organic synthesis (CO) in structural analysis (CO, P1), biochemistry (P3) and in the theoretical and experimental investigation of supramolecular interactions (CO, P1, P4).
The project is multi-, inter- and transdisciplinar and is dealing with problems of high complexity in the fields of basic sciences: organic and supramolecular chemistry, computational and molecular physics, biochemistry. The research proposed in this project will be carried out by a strong team, formed with researchers of high experience from two important universities: Babes-Bolyai University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davilat; and of two national research institutes: the National Institute of R-D for Isotopic and Molecular Technologies of Cluj-Napoca and the National Institute of R-D for Physics and Nuclear Engineering of Bucharest.
The topic proposed in this project and the creation of a research partnership which merges the knowledge of researchers of many fields allow that we fulfil the national political request for the preparation for the integration in the European Research Area (ERA) and the target results will be relevant for the basic sciences in agreement with the request of the new European Research Program (FP-7).
In agreement with the objectives of the CEEX program and with those of Module I (P-CD), this complex research and development project proposes:
- to create an important research concern focussed on the investigation of chemical and biochemical supramolecular systems in order to develop the molecular electronics
- to produce advanced knowledge, by original contributions, in supramolecular chemistry and biochemistry and to rationalize the action of chemical, physical and biological stimuli on the supramolecular systems in order to produce components for molecular electronics (logical gates and memories)
- to enhance the visibility of the high-performance Romanian research by high level papers published in ISI journals or presented in International Conferences and Congresses and to allow the integration of the Romanian research in the European area,
- to prepare the new generation of researchers with interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary knowledge, well prepared for the integration in the European community,
- to develop the scientific cooperation with European universities in join PhD programs and by participation in large European research partnerships.
