DESIGN, SYNTHESIS, STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND SUPRAMOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF SOME NEW POLYTOPIC MACROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS, PSEUDO-ROTAXANES AND ROTAXANES

This project takes into consideration the synthesis and investigation of compounds of type [2], [3] and [4]rotaxanes and pseudorotaxanes with potential special supramolecular properties that would be used in building molecular machines and other molecular devices. This kind of compounds are essential elements in the development of future technologies at molecular or nanomolecular level. Mono-, bi- and trimacrocyclic (polytopical) derivatives having terpyridine units and also straight, bifurcated or trifurcated axle molecules will be synthesised from commercially available starting materials, as intermediates of pseudorotaxanes and rotaxanes. Due to sterical complementarity, molecules will self-assembly into [n]pseudorotaxanes that, by attachment of proper stoppers, will lead to the corresponding [n]rotaxanes. The structure of the compounds thus obtained will be determined by NMR advanced techniques, mass spectrometry and X-ray diffractometry, while the coordination ability will be measured by ESI-MS experiments. The stability of the synthesised pseudorotaxanes and rotaxanes will be also investigated as well as determination of their supramolecular properties, in view of finding applications, in nanotechnology for example.
