    for undergraduate programmes followed by master and doctoral programmes.

    The main objectives of the teaching and training in the field of chemical engineering are based on the accumulation of:

    Students working in a laboratory.

    • knowledge of the basic principles, phenomena and theories of mathematics, physics, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, materials science for understanding and applying engineering methods in order to solve the problems arising in the chemical systems (chemical engineering reactions, modelling, simulation, control);
    • skills for design, control, research and development of chemical processes, unit operations and complex technological systems according to the legislation for environmental protection (computer science, kinetics, statistics, thermodynamics, system theory);
    • skills to use the modern computer and information technology for documenting, modelling, simulation and for controlling the chemical processes, for communicating with experts in other disciplines, including skills for using foreign languages;
    • abilities to design and operate chemical processes based on momentum, heat and mass transfer (design projects);
    • competence to apply the multidisciplinary knowledge of chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering associated to the economical and management knowledge for solving complex problems of chemical systems;

    abilities to get engaged in lifelong learning, necessary for continuing high performance in whatever career path the engineer will choose.

    History of the department

    The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science is part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the BABEŞ-BOLYAI University of Cluj-Napoca (BBU), ROMANIA.

    The main building of the faculty.

    The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science within the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of BBU has an old tradition.

    Founded in the present form in 1952, our faculty originally included the organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry chairs.

    The development of chemistry and chemical engineering fields during the years '60-'70 determined the foundation of a chemical engineering department in 1971 within the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Following the restructuring of higher education, started in the academic year 1974-1975, this department was transferred to the Faculty of Chemistry of BABEŞ-BOLYAI University.

    Thus, the Chair of Oxide Materials Science was founded in 1974 within the Faculty of Chemistry in Cluj-Napoca. The development of engineering education as well as the wide range of subjects studied in the area of chemical engineering has determined the transformation of this chair into the Chair of Chemical Engineering and Oxide Materials Science, starting from June 1978.

    Nowadays, after more than 30 years of engineering education at BBU, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science presents itself as a strong centre of education and research. It became renowned both nationally and internationally. Our graduates are well appreciated as well trained specialists both inside our country and abroad. A certain proof of this is the fact that most of them are admitted as PhD students or researchers in renowned European and American universities.
