Acta Metallomica – Metal Elements in the Environment, Medicine and
Biology is a quarterly journal,
started as a continuation of the series of symposia "Metal Elements in
Environment, Medicine and Biology" (MEEMB), which took place under the
auspices of the Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca Branches of the Romanian Academy as
well as of the Biochemical Comission of the Romanian
Academy, and for which the in extenso papers have
been published in a series of volumes, starting with MEEMB - Tome I (1994). The
contents of the symposium series, as well as full-text articles of the journal
starting 2014, are available online freely, at the journal’s homepage,
http://www.chem.ubbcluj.ro/acta-metallomica/.
Acta Metallomica aims
to publish new data as well as review papers at the interface of biology,
biochemistry, chemistry, physics, medicine and environmental sciences, with the
role of metals as a key underlining element. This includes, without
limitations, metal ion toxicity and mechanisms thereof (including oxidative
stress), homeostasis, bioaccumulation, pollution, catalysis and interaction
with biologically relevant ligands, all viewed at scales varying from systemic,
to supramolecular and further to atomic-level. The types of papers considered
for publications include original research reports (without limitation on
length), reviews, essays, and book reviews.
The MEEMB symposium series, organised originally by
Profs. Petru Drăgan
and Zeno Gârban at Timişoara
under the auspices of the local branch of the Romanian Academy,
had its first event in October 1993, with the first Proceedings volume
published in 1994. This meeting drew from the experience of the organizers in
their quality of Founding members of a “Working Group for Metal Research
in Biological Systems” set up in Timişoara
as early as 1979. These research interests, reflected also in the name of the
symposium, precede the later-established concept of Metallomics
– a concept now embedded in the official name of the new journal Acta
Metallomica. As a reference, well-established entities related to the
biological role of metals, such as the SBIC (international Society for
Biological Inorganic Chemistry), or the JBIC (Journal of Biological Inorganic
Chemistry), were founded in 1995 and 1996, respectively; the first edition of
the reputed International Conference on Biological Inorganic Chemistry (ICBIC)
was held in Florence in 1993.
Approximately 100
papers were contributed to the 1993 first edition of MEEMB, with guests from
Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, England and
Venezuela. The international character of the meeting was maintained through
the following editions, in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010
and 2011. Since 2009, Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu was recruited as a co-editor of
the series, and the meetings were held alternatively in Cluj-Napoca and Timişoara, now benefitting from the supervision of the
local branches of the Romanian Academy in both cities.
In 2012, the Presidium
of the Academy approved the decision to institute a journal, Acta Metallomica, that would cover the same topics as the MEEMB
proceedings series, with the aim to draw on the interest expressed in this
subject area and at the same time to allow for better integration into the
mainstream currents of scientific knowledge at international level.

communication, of an abstract or as a part of a published lecture, review, or
thesis); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its
publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, and, after being
accepted by Acta Metallomica, it will
not be published in another journal.
